The tools of the trade

When we started our first medical transcription business in 1980, specialists of the transcript, our tools consisted of IBM Selectric typewriters, Dictaphone transcribers and lots of carbon paper. That was as high tech as we did. The paper carbon was used to make copies so that we can use to calculate the "line number" when it came time to bill customers and pay the typists. Twice a month left a big box of yellow carbons and then begin the work of "calculating" the number line. It was rather uneven to say the least.

Each day we took a tour of hospitals and doctors to pick up their tapes and bring them to our office. Our typists would come to our office every day to fetch their daily supply of tapes. Later that night back to their written records.

By 1986, issued in operation medical services, we were using a word processor Lanier devoted couple. Were the size of small refrigerators. But a very good job. We were quite "modern." Of course there was no "network" of computers or Internet searches. In fact, there was no Internet.

In About this time we have added a Xerox machine and finished with our carbon paper. Now Lanier word processors were great, but these machines were copied the size of a compact Mercedes. And talk about expensive rents, but carbon paper was a very fond memory indeed. But high technology which are really high now! However, they were still trying to count online using the copies we have made the written document. And we were still making the rounds daily to collect the tapes and hand written documents.

In 1994 when we founded the digital transcription Inc, were willing to take a step real high-tech technology. No more photocopying, dictation or word processors Lanier.

True word processing on the computer Writing was a reality and digital files were here to stay. From this point forward, no longer collect the tapes and hand written documents. We installed a digital call-in dictation system in our office. To use our medical transcription service, had to dictate using a telephone instead of a machine dictation. When the dictation was complete, the files we had on hand immediately. Instead of waiting for typists to come to our office to pick up the tapes, we digital files delivered in the individual typist email box on our computer FTP to download immediately. When the work became typists upload the Word document back to the team of FTP. We in turn develops the complete files to the email address of the FTP client in electronic equipment for The discharge into the doctor's where they print the final product.

And since the transcript was in a digital file, a completely new method required to have written the document was made available, line count software.

One of the advantages of this system we did our ability to recruit typists throughout the U.S. instead of just a short drive time to our office. In addition, it also allowed us to serve customers throughout the U.S. too. The client no longer has to be within a reasonable time unit to our office.

So now our favorite tools are: 1) equipment top desktop with powerful word processing software MS Word. 2) The digital dictation system, 2) to our FTP server and 3) rely on our software online

So tell me, what tools Seen to your favorites in the field of medical transcription?
