How long do you think it will be before the current Ashes series begins to be labeled as "The Greatest Ever"?
The 2005 Ashes series was awarded the nickname "The Ever more of the series." Even half as bleak as Wisden named as such. And I see the same thing happening this time with England squeak a draw in Cardiff, and after a hard fought victory of the Lord, where in a moment seemed capable of Australia chasing 522. So, Do you think 2005 was the greatest series ever? 2009 is shaping up to be even better? Or have a series of the past that you think is better deserves the title?
To do a quick comparison of sports. The Ashes 2009 is like this year's Wimbledon Final between Federer and Roddick. Both the Ashes 2009 and the Wimbledon final will be close, and exciting, but both were overshadowed by an even more exciting and star-studded party before them (2005 Ashes and Wimbledon 2008 Final). What I mean is that, however attractive the Ashes 2009 will be, will never have the stars that he did in 2005. So how can the greatest series ever feature only 1 or 2 great players, and not even be among the 2 best teams in the world (the 2005 Ashes was 1 vs. 2 in the world). (The 2009 Wimbledon final was between 2 and 6) While that 2008 was 1 vs 2. Personally, I think the 2005 Ashes series was the largest I have ever seen, although the older generation tend to go with the Ashes 1981 (including my old). I can not speak for anyone else, but the 2005 Ashes series captured my imagination and made me fall in love with cricket again. There were 3 Great Test Matches, and 1 very exciting. Many series get called great, even if they have only 1 great game.
