Cell of origin as defined for the common type of breast cancer (Tufts University, Health Sciences), the breast cancer researchers have identified progenitor cell that gives rise to the most common form of breast cancer. Using a mouse model, researchers found that inhibition of a protein essential for these progenitor cells prevented the formation of mammary tumors. The discovery may provide new target for drugs against breast cancer.
