There is no doubt that in all areas of life, things have to change depending on the consumption of land resources, and nowhere is this more evident than in the recycling of electrical and electronic waste.
Estimates show that the amount of electronic waste produced electrical and chemical life per person in the Western world is around 3.3 tons. In the UK, 1 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste going into landfills every year. Undoubtedly, this will only increase as time goes on unless actions and attitudes change? Current trends are not only responsible nor sustainable. It is estimated that 1 billion people live below the poverty line, 2 billion people lack safe drinking water, 3.1 billion lack sanitation and millions of children living in trash landfills worldwide.
And this, when about 20% of the world's population in the developed world and yet are responsible for 80% of consumption commercial energy, 75% of wood consumption, 50% of the fish and the consumption of cereals and 40% of freshwater consumption
Meanwhile, in 2005 the World Land Trust said that nearly 90% of all office printing and copier cartridges can be reused or recycled. We have to see this happen.
Statistics scary, but certainly great strides being made in legislation and environmental standards in the electronics industry. The WEEE Directive in the UK and Germany "Blue Angel" scheme are two such initiatives. The sanctions against companies that ignore their responsibilities are very serious.
However, on a basis individual when it comes to buying new equipment, each can do for its part, takes time to learn more about the environmental impact of certain types of equipment. By example, when it comes to office or home printers, we can recognize that the longevity and durability are not limited to the body of the only printer. Equally important are the parties mobile and image elements of the printer.
From different manufacturers, and individual machines of different manufacturers across any range, have user settings that increase convenience by integrating all critical elements in a replacement kit disposal. It is not difficult to see that the savings short-term cost [which actually in some cases may not be as great] and convenience can be costly in terms of the appropriate treatment and management of spare parts.
Inkjet printers are largely configured with an ink print head integrated with or printhead long-term with separate ink tank (s). In addition, there are variations in length settings of the print head. These may include those with replaceable heads or those with permanent units that are equipped from the factory with no user replaceable parts. Lexmark is found exclusively in the first category, comprising only with cartridges, and Brother and Epson are exclusively in the latter category of fixed, long life print heads only. Canon and Hewlett-Packard are in both categories, with the two configurations are in their product range, while Hewlett-Packard also has models based on both in permanent and long-replaceable print head life
In the case of laser printers, the situation is very similar. Some manufacturers use a single piece of toner cartridges in the whole business end imaging system is contained in one unit, while others divide the drive into component parts.
These components essentially provide the toner cassette, the development roller and the OPC (image) drum. Configurations are to be divided three elements apart or just split the toner cassette mechanical elements (roller and OPC drum) included an imaging unit. In some cases (most typical color laser printers) the roller and the toner are combined with a separate OPC drum.
Engine manufacturers usually print using the one-piece design include (for monochrome laser printers) Canon, Lexmark, Ricoh, and Fuji Xerox. These typically employ two or three pieces of configuration, but also some units of a single piece include: Brother, Konica Minolta, OKI, and Sharp.
Lexmark is in the position of being a majority of a single manufacturer pieces with some printers that have a multi-part construction. Kyocera is a category of its own with an ultra long life OPC drum configuration.
On the total cost of printing program, printing multipart configurations once guaranteed to offer an overall cost per page. But this is no longer the case, because manufacturers have realized the marketing power based on cost per page and not the cost of consumable items of ink or toner.
In terms Overall, in the end of the market, monochrome laser printers use a single toner cartridge of a piece with all the image elements it contains. This is because the drum is worked hard and it would be very difficult to ensure the drum life far beyond the life of the toner contained in the cartridge (in particular 30,000 pages per cartridge).
However, the environmental consequences, even in these cases, there are important because of the long life, multi-hand, map to the printer user and the manufacturer and the planet.
