Restore lost hair due to hereditary factors, is the dream of many men and women. Until not long ago, the only effective and authentic-looking options to reverse hair loss are surgical concealment. It was only with the advent of FUT and discovering the true cause of the baldness - the harmful effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair follicles - that the chances of a victim of hair loss, reversing loss natural hair have improved considerably.
The three best weapons in the fight against hair loss to date are both FDA-approved drugs Drugs - finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine) and hair surgery, transplantation of follicular units and, above all, the technique of unit extraction follicular. However, there is still no definitive cure as each of the three hair restoration methods mentioned above has its limitations. Minoxidil and Finasteride work well only at the vertex of the scalp area, and finasteride can not be used by women. Women hair surgery is appropriate only for people who have enough hair density in the donor area, and many, who usually suffer from diffuse thinning, do not make good candidates for hair transplantation.
Therefore, scientists around the world are constantly seeking new approaches to treating hair loss. Currently there are several promising drugs and developing new techniques below, but progress appears to have slowed somewhat due to the global financial crisis, as some R & D projects are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain funding to continue their investigations.
Most progress has been made on dutasteride. Dutasteride is an antiandrogen in its chemical structure and mode of action is similar to finasteride. Used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and since it is a dual inhibitor of 5 alpha reductase, which should DHT blocker be more potent than finasteride. Therefore, it is believed to be more effective in treating hair loss, especially in the frontal area scalp. Dutasteride completed Phase III clinical trials this year and the results were expected to be published soon.
NEOSH101 was developed originally by the U.S. company Neosil medical research and was until recently undergoing Phase IIb trials. In late 2008, was acquired by Peplin Neosil, Inc. development stage specialty pharmaceutical company and since then no information about new developments in clinical trials has been released. In clinical trials previous NEOSH101 was shown to be more powerful and fast action, stimulating hair growth than minoxidil and need only apply once a day. Despite of significantly improving the existing hair loss treatment options, NEOSH101 not going to be the cure for baldness. Clinical trials appear to be moving slower that most patients like hair loss and therefore do not hold your breath waiting to hit the market in the short term.
Another promising line of research is the development of telomerase. Telomerase is an enzyme that is able to put natural limits of telomeres and thus protect butter. Telomerase that maintains genome integrity. The shorter telomeres are associated with premature aging processes. However, uncontrolled activation of telomerase can cause cancer. Cancer research is the main focus of studies of telomerase, but scientists are also looking for other applications such as anti-aging medicines and drugs against baldness and gray hair. Telomerase research could really change the world of medicine, but its commercial application could be a good 15 years away.
Hair Multiplication, often called the regeneration of hair or Hair cloning is the next treatment option, hoping to be developed. This technique involves removing hair follicles from the back of the head the patient, the cultivation and propagation of them and injection of new hair cells become bald scalp. The healthcare company in the UK Intercytex seems to be the pioneer in research on hair multiplication. Intercytex has completed a Phase II clinical development of ICX-TRC (the suspension of one's own patient in dermal papilla cells). The main benefit of the proliferation of hair would be the solution to the shortage of donor hair that is the main limiting factor in hair transplantation. However, Intercytex is currently in financial difficulties and after not finding an investor, you will need to continue operating on its own. Aderans, Intercytex's main competitor, has also recently launched a Phase II clinical development based on cells in the regeneration of hair to men and women.
Generating new hair follicles in the hair of free skin wounds is a completely new approach to regrow hair. It was discovered accidentally when the skin wound in mice began to produce new hair. This technology is being developed by U.S. company medical devices, Follica, which has licensed this technology from the University of Pennsylvania. Although this method may sound strange, it is said that only the use of common tools and medicines who have been medically approved and therefore can not take too long to be available.
This list of projects submitted in the field of research hair loss includes the most promising lines of development, but not exhaustive. However, none of the new therapies, with the exception of dutasteride, is expected to reach the market before 2013 and the immediate future of hair restoration is the improvement of surgical techniques, increased yields follicular unit extraction method and make it more affordable to a larger portion of the population.
