Automated System Recovery (ASR) is a Windows tool used to simplify the recovery of a server system or boot volumes. ASR consists of two parts: an automatic backup and restore an automated system. The backup part can be accessed on the backup utility in System Tools.
Users can access it through the Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard in Backup. ASR Preparation Wizard backup the System State data, system services, and all disks associated with the operating system components. Also creates a diskette containing information about the backup, the disk configurations, and how to perform a restore.
Past efforts of the software giants
Microsoft
Windows Vista SP1 Automated System Recovery was released in February last year.
The ASR is one of the aspects of Windows Vista that has been developed with the introduction of Vista Service Pack-1. An application programming interface for Windows, ASR is designed to monitor and record the configuration of disks and volumes in the system. It will also manage records in accordance with the labels of critical and non critical depending on whether or not containing the state of the system or operating system components.
With Windows Vista SP1, Microsoft has introduced support for Firmware Interface extensible (EFI). As such, the ASR in both Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 has been adjusted in order to be able to recover EFI system partition on a bare metal recovery.
IBM
IBM Tivoli is ASR in static IP environments using Tivoli Storage Manager was introduced in November last year.
The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Recovery Process Automated System which supports DHCP enabled networks. In networks that do not support DHCP and static IP applications, the backup sets local is used to retrieve these systems in case of an accident or a total failure.
ASR is used to retrieve Microsoft Windows Server system in the event of a failure catastrophic system or hardware. The objective of the ASR process is to return the operating system to the last backup. This is a two-step process.
* Microsoft Windows installs a temporary operating system image using the original operating system support.
* Windows invokes TSM to restore and system volume information system state.

Hewlett Packard
HP Blade PC Automated System Recovery Utility 2.00 description Rev. E was introduced earlier this year.
This package contains the Recovery Automated System (ASR-2) services for desktop models and operational support systems. The ASR-2 causes an HP Blade PC service that has stopped responding (locked up), or has experienced a "blue screen error, to restart (reboot), bringing back online and make it available to network users.
The development includes modifying the installation script to add support for 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating systems (Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista).
Conclusion
The user files ASR does not backup or other data should be used only as a last resort, because in the preparation of an ASR restore formatted the system and boot volumes on the hard disk, making other less drastic methods of recovery impossible.
