Earthbound “Devil’s Machine” crash on a real SNES

by admin on January 2, 2012

Nothing too exciting, really. This is just to show that it doesn't behave the same as ZSNES. If you also have a copier that doesn't support Game Genie codes and/or if your copier doesn't trip the anti-piracy measures, you can patch an SMC format ROM as follows: $2A1D-2A1E from D0 1A to EA EA $3FFDA from F0 to D0

@velocity37 This is what I was thinking of when watching this video and how I would react to this:
“Beats Pokey who then turns off the Devil’s Machine, which causes the game to freeze/crash. Which takes me back to the title screen”
Me: O_O WTF!? Oh well at least I can load up my save file! :) “Checks save file(s) to load.”
In the words of that one guy from that one South Park episode: Aaaaaaaaaaaannnddd
it’s GONE!!!!!!!!! (Just like Error 410: Gone)
Me: “Rage Face” Ffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu…

@velocity37 PAL… PAL Cartridge are useless.
It’s really useless.
It doesn’t give you hapiness, it’s just the game slowed down at 50 FPS.

@Plantazm005 You could imagine your OWN thing.

Ex : Giygas pown you with his evil power in a single second, then froze you for good. Then, Porky, will took you and trow you on the fire. Just imagine. Scary isn’t it ? Then you will find yourself dead in a casket, with all the people you encountered around you. All in tears. Then the Earth explode, and a game over screen. Reset time. All saves files erased.

Earthbound would be know as the unfinisheable game.

Do your own, and post it.

@305Ronan I see what you mean… O_O

305Ronan January 2, 2012 at 7:40 am

@Plantazm005 Or maybe, something other is supposed to happen that nobody have to see, so it froze. Yuck. Maybe Giygas finish you off, and Porky laught evily. Then, you, Ness, think of your mother, and all the people you encountered. Then, freeze. Reset, the only way to get out. ALL SAVES FILES ERASED ? A kid would think the game is haunted.

@Plantazm005 Earthbound. For many reason. The screen froze after the “another meal to him !” That would mean that Giygas just killed you at the speed of light. And you will see this screen like that for the eternity ? You could imagine alot of thing like this. In Sonic CD, there’s no hide sense. It’s just Human Sonic. Nothing more.

705 HP of damage to Heavily Armed Porky!

@velocity37 I’ve been thinking about getting a Powerpak. It can emulate a lot of games (except for those with a FX chip, but those are few) but that will take a while. A repro would be really awesome however they are very rare. I’ll see about it. I believe the mother series got a lot more attention thanks to SSBB and Mother 3 and the fact that none of these games (earthbound etc.) will ever be released again. Not really sure about that but it’s possible. And thanks again. I like the info :)

@playinandworking09 75 Eur is about 100 USD, which is also what it costs here for a bare cart. For some reason this game has jumped up in price over the last few years. It only used to cost ~30 USD. How about picking up a SNES PowerPak or other flash cartridge? Then you can run ROMs through a patcher (such as uCON64).

playinandworking09 January 2, 2012 at 9:29 am

@velocity37 I already have a PAL snes console and I’m not planning to buy another soon. Although, I do have a Convertor (from Fire I believe) that should still work for japanese and american games. Problem is, a earthbound cartridge is even harder to find in Europe than in America. They ask at least 75 euros, only cartridge itself. Not even sure whether the save files still work … Maybe if I can find it cheaper. Till then, I’ll be looking for a PAL repro.
Also, thanks for the info :D

velocity37 January 2, 2012 at 10:29 am

@playinandworking09 If someone were to make a PAL reproduction, they’d have to modify the ROM to remove a check. I’d assume they’d patch out the other checks while they’re at it. It looks like some people have had success with NTSC->PAL converters (which seems to trick the anti-PAL check). The converter would only trigger these events if it modified the ROM. Since you want to play on real hardware (instead of emulation) why not pick up an NTSC console to use on a 60Hz TV?

playinandworking09 January 2, 2012 at 11:06 am

Can this also happen with reproduction cartridges? I’m looking for EB on a PAL cartridge but I don’t know if some extra chip is needed or something :S

malakaki111 January 2, 2012 at 11:08 am

So, Giygas ate Poo?

BitchcakesMcDoogle January 2, 2012 at 11:18 am

The saves… they ran away because they could not grasp the true form of copyright infringement!!!

MrPopsicle43 January 2, 2012 at 12:04 pm

Moral of the story: DON’T PIRATE GAMES.

KingOfMissingno January 2, 2012 at 12:18 pm

HE TURBED OFF THE DEVIL MACHINE DX!!! THATS WHAT KEEPS THE SAVE FILES ALIVE

yusukeelric January 2, 2012 at 12:29 pm

@Plantazm005 US Sonic CD… Come on, Sonic can commit suicide along with a creepy music… and the human head sonic… Nevermind…. Here , you have to pirate a game… But in sonic CD. it punishes you with nightmares only getting a game over… Or fighting the final boss…

Plantazm005 January 2, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Which is creepier, Earthbound? Or Sonic CD?

NaruBren274 January 2, 2012 at 2:24 pm

snes just waits until you finish the game until they then DESTROY YOUR FILES

StudioSHAD January 2, 2012 at 2:28 pm

Save files got hurt and collapsed…..

anihilator100 January 2, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Well, eaten saves imply that paula, ness, poo and jeff got eaten. That’s scary

THENAMEISQUICKMAN January 2, 2012 at 4:13 pm

Oh no…the memories…MY SAVE FILES!!!!!!!!

Caleb5617 January 2, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Does anybody notice the red skull on the left side of the center?

MrWakka66 January 2, 2012 at 5:14 pm

Now Porky (actual translation Pokey was a typo) is laughing at you

DaVince21 January 2, 2012 at 6:01 pm

@Teraku2 You’re thinking the other way around. It’s ZSNES that happens to support Game Genie codes. The Game Genie was an unlicensed, physical cheating medium for the SNES.
