I get my grade 7, a battery for his birthday?
Played drums in the band last year and loves it. Someone told me not to buy Walmart has the game, the drums that are cheap and the sound quality is poor. What I look for in a battery? What makes a good one? And how should I expect to spend? I'm not against getting a used set, as long as they are good.
Brands to look decent are: Mapex Tama Pearl Yamaha But, Of course, even an inexpensive kit can sound very good. It's not just the drummer counts in the final tone. The quality of the skins is very important, and it is equally important that fit properly. Advice on the setting can be found at many sites around the Internet, and as for the skins, I have always used and recommend "Reyes Pinstripe Time" by Remo on the rack, floor toms and bass drum (beater side), and a white coated "Ambassador" the head of the trap (also buy Remo). They seem to be the best, in maintaining the tension and tone of the longest. Also note that if the noise is a problem, electronic batteries are getting cheaper all the time, and even low-cost sound pretty good these days, and can be played through headphones connected to a PC for recording, etc. Happy drumming!
