Acceleration is defined as the rate of change of speed. So tell me. What is the acceleration of today? In this world we live in what is not being done faster than it was a century or even a decade ago? How quickly can we get from Los Angeles to New York in 2007 against the time the trip would take in 1907? How much faster you can get a package from Paris to New York in 1957 could be compared to 2007? And if you want to compare communications with several people, how much faster the Internet allow that? And we just started! The speed with which things can and will happen in the coming years is not simply imagined.
Peter Russell does a fabulous job in helping us understand all this in his book, "The white hole in time." So let me give credit for this analysis I will use it, but make it very briefly to illustrate how accelerated time of all mankind has been and is!
Peter uses the Empire State Building for his artwork.
It has 108 plants, which means that each plant would represent about 42 million years of time. Thus, in this cosmological elevator ride, the simplest living cells do not appear until we're on the 25th floor!
> 60th floor of oxygen breathing bacteria (without clothes from here)
> 70th floor complex cells capable of reproduction (unfurnished)
> 80th floor multicellular organisms (real no cooking)
> 97th floor apparently fish (enough light humor)
> 99th floor crawling creatures of the earth in a sea
> 104-107a-story rule of the dinosaurs!
> Penthouse - Mammals appear
And then a few inches from the ceiling of the Attic-Voila! Homo erectus makes his presence. It has taken 99.9% way of life get a few inches from the ceiling of the floor of the 108th. By the way, that Homo sapiens sapiens seems a quarter inch from the ceiling.
If we simply to take a look at the past 100 years we can see that we are experiencing exponential and logarithmic advances in information, knowledge, communications, and all that is leading our lives. Telephones and Internet, with future advances in nanotechnology will increase our awareness computed for a stage so amazing who have no idea where we might be in say five years.
That would be 2012!
