This fax has the following draw backs:
1) Poor Overseas mode. I’ve tried 10 different fax numbers in the following countries: France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden and there was always a ‘comm.error’ message.
2) It can’t hang up if errors occur. If there is a problem in a fax transmission, this fax won’t hang up/free the phone line.
3) It has a very ‘fragile’ construction (paper holder is a joke)
4) You won’t be able to use it as a printer in network mode (ethernet connection and, probably, USB). So called ‘printer drivers’ are not optimized for Windows XP and you will get a lot of ‘can’t communicate with printer’ errors.
I’d suggest to stay away from this fax. Canon L80 might be a better solution if you can invest more in a fax machine.

We wanted an all in one unit for faxing and messages for our home office. This one appeared to fill the bill. It’s compact and the quality of the printing is good. LCD is hard to read and the controls are clunky. Still a good deal for the money.

Network was simple to set up using XP. The only downside is that the drivers are not include in the box – you have to download them from Brother and its about a 90mb download. After that, connect your cables and your set. I dont know why everyone is saying it wont work with XP or is difficult to set up. The whole process took about 5 min.

I bought this machine solely for simple faxing. I was attracted by the fact that it is network ready. I read the first review before buying this machine. I did not buy brother’s optional hardware to connect the machine to my network (200.00 is alot to make this machine network ready). I bought Buffalo’s ethernet adapter, and I connected this machine and my Dell desktop to the ethernet adapter. The fax was working on my network in 1 hour as a printer and fax machine. However, in order for the fax/printer machine to work you will need to download all of the drivers and firmware update from the Brother’s site. I downloaded all necessary software to my desktop, and two laptops in under an hour, and the brother’s machine was network ready within 1 hour.
Furthermore, I bought the fax for it’s distictive ring feature. I have two numbers that ring to the same line. One is for faxes and the other is for voice calls. Also, I have the fax machine set to store faxes instead of printing them to conserve on paper and so I can weed out the junk faxes. I only gave the product three stars because there is no disc included.

Overall, I am pleased with this fax machine/printer. I am not sure why Brother does not send a disc with it; it would make it so much easier to use. I haven’t been able to scan yet, as the manual refers me to the disc, and there is no disc. The print quality is good. The fax works with our distinctive ring tone, which is what we were mainly looking for. The phone doesn’t sound great, if you get too close to the receiver there is an echo but, all-in-all, it is a pretty good little machine.
